FLORA

The lush abundance of summer’s foliage surrounds me. I can’t escape the sweet smell of fresh blooms and the scent of freshly cut grass. Even wet leaves deliver an earthy sensation that reminds me of walking through the rich forests in Ohio.

I live in a cold climate where the growing season is quite short. These moments are deeply cherished, and I know they will be gone quickly. I eagerly await the first blooms and embrace the daily ritual of long walks through lush forests, meadows and even my backyard.

It’s amazing how all my senses fire with the expanse of nature and flora around me. Not only do my eyes feast on the beauty of each living plant, but as they draw me in closer, I am fascinated by the elements they possess. Their elegant lines, shifts in color and value, shadows, texture and frailty, knowing tomorrow they will look much different. I don’t rush these moments of noticing.

I am drawn to the unique, flawed, and unusual shape or form. I come in close to see it from every angle, really see it.

It’s at this moment that I create a composition in my mind. A way to capture the essence of this living beauty. A way to stop and appreciate the simple elegance around us if we only pay attention.

There is an overwhelming source of inspiration everywhere I look. Right in front of me, it's all here to observe, appreciate and simply breathe. I am in awe over the complexity of each individual flower, its unique character and the subtle variations. I am moved in a very deep way. I wish you could see what I see.

“If you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for a moment.” - Georgia O’Keeffe
